To Upgrade Your Boxed Cake Mix, Use Condensed Milk

Home bakers who value time and energy can make boxed cake mix taste homemade. While adding water, oil, and egg to a premixed yellow or chocolate cake mix is fine, there are many ways to make it taste homemade with a few simple ingredient swaps.

Replace flavorless water and oil with buttermilk, sour cream, or coffee, but what about adding sweetness to your confection?

Sweetened condensed milk might enhance your next convenience cake mix. To explain, condensed milk is sweetened and can't replace milk or water 1:1. Dilute sweetened condensed milk with 50% water before adding it to cake mix.

This homemade mixture can replace the liquid component of your commercial mix, but condensed milk is sweet, so it may impact the cake's flavor.

Condensed milk makes a great topping in many ways. Make your own Tres Leches cake by mixing sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, and heavy cream to make a delightful soaking sauce to keep your boxed cake wet.

You can also pour condensed milk over a newly made cake with holes. A delicious delight will result from the cake absorbing the thick sweet milk. Finally, try condensed milk for a simple glaze or frosting.

Salmon with sour cream sauce, especially dill and horseradish, is a winning combination. Add steamed green beans to the platter.
